Anonymous asked:

hello, was wondering if you had any good books or articles on cuba and it's history? it's so hard to find any writings that arent overwhelmingly negative or anti communist or just straight up full of misinformation -_-

determinate-negation:

hello again, anon who sent the last ask about writings about cuba; wanted to specify that im cuban american and i feel bad for not being more educated on the subject, ive just been really frustrated lately seeing all the bullshit takes and straight up lies on social media lately about “oooo scary communism” 🥴 without ever mentioning the embargo and the way the US has been fucking over cuba for years!! so im aware at least that america is the cause for all the economic issues Cuba is having and that it’s not the big bad evil communism or w/e these idiots online are saying, but one thing id like to know is where did all these claims that cuba is “killing dissenters” come from? i keep seeing shit about people being killed/ disappeared for “protesting communism” in Cuba but no one ever has sources to back up their claims lmao so how did that even start

it just started because its the same thing people say every single time when western media starts pushing for regime change in a foreign country. most of the pictures of protestors being beaten that are getting spread around online have been proven to be from different latin american countries. i dont doubt there are instances of police brutality happening in cuba but its dishonest when all the proof being offered is fake.

since the revolution, the united states has been pushing the narrative that cuba has a “policy of starving its people” and that it is repressive and violent. it is true repression and violence happened because american companies, rich landowners, imperialists and the slave owning class were expelled from cuba or killed following the revolution. revolutions are violent and that is an unfortunate fact of any political struggle against a powerful class. this is not the same type of repression being caricatured by western media. since 1962 the US embargo on cuba prevented them from trading with other countries, and from all exports which had a huge effect as cuba was one of the biggest exporters of sugar, among other things. the book “nothing can stop the course of history” is an interview with fidel castro and two us congressmen and he goes into a lot of the economic history and i recommend it a lot. theres also this documentary about agriculture in cuba and i think the first part of it is general history

here is another about how cuba survived despite the embargo after the fall of the soviet union, which was their main trade partner.

here is an interview with assata shakur on her experiences in cuba after she was given asylum by the cuban government. these are some infographics debunking myths on cuban history and the cuban political system

theres also this book called the Cuban Embargo: Domestic Politics of American Foreign Policy, but i read it for class so it is more academic and pretty long
